18x36 jazz band plays the city at night

Night 1:  18x36 canvas.  This was originally intended to be jazz cats playing Chicago by night.  The basic rhythm is established.

Night 2:  Some raw color is blocked in. Marina towers and Merch Mart appear.  The moon rises.  The trumpet strikes a bold angle.

Night 3: colors are refined.  Sky is taking shape.   The moon was too prominent, so it was eliminated.  Hello Wrigley Building.

Night 4: The painting has taken on a serious feeling.  Cats are deemed too playful, so they become people.  Buildings/note forms in lower part of the painting take more dimension.

The moon reappears, smaller.  The band takes shape.  The sky more defined.

The band is given unsatisfactory  faces.   They will be repainted.  Hancock is given a  color in the center diamond.

Painting finished.  The new faces are much better. Stars are like seasoning.  The line wandering down the bass on to the grass is one of my favorite elements.
